The Abacus story so far…
Abacus Early Learning School is a family run business founded in 1989 by a mother of five Shaaron Petgrave with the help of her mother Marjorie Taylor and her grandmother ‘Margot’ who was then known as just ‘nanny’. Marjorie who is known as Ms Taylor had previously worked as a teacher for many years at the Belleville School and was able to bring her expertise in early years to help set up and establish Abacus as an ‘early learning school’ where children could become confident learners often exceeding expectations.
Abacus nursery first began operating from the ground floor of an Edwardian home conveniently located a stone’s throw from Streatham Hill train station whilst Shaaron, her husband and two young children lived above.
The nursery grew and became popular in a short space of time, so the decision was made to expand into the first floor of the property. Abacus further grew in popularity and a second site was opened in 1994 in St Andrews Church Hall on Laitwood Road in Balham followed by our recent venture Abacus West Norwood which operates out of an Victorian property in the ever popular Julian’s farm area of West Norwood.

We do this by employing individuals who are creative professionals with a passion in childcare to ensure an enjoyable experience for both your child and yourself. We are open from 8am to 6pm weekly and close for Christmas and 2 additional weeks per year.
Baby room 9 months – 24 months
We aim to provide a warm and loving environment for your baby where they can explore in a safe homely environment.
Toddler Room 2-3 years
Our toddler room contains different activities to keep even the most active child fully occupied. The children will be able to enjoy painting, construction toys, imaginative play, sand, water, outdoor play, to name but a few.
The children learn through play. The routine is a little more structured in order to prepare them for school. Children are encouraged to make choices and have fun. A wide variety of resources are accessible throughout the day. Independence, listening and sharing are all promoted during our daily routine.
We provide meals, snacks, drinks and fresh milk for your child during their day at Abacus. lunch is a hot meal followed by dessert. Tea is a lighter meal served with fresh fruit, vegetables and cheese. We also have dairy and soya free menus.
Extra activities include:
Le club de frere Jaques
Mr Lovelace’s music class
Jiggle and jive dance company
We believe nursery children should enjoy variation in their day as they would if they were home. We therefore make ample use of local open spaces and amenities by planning local outings into our weekly schedule which include both Tooting Bec and Streatham Commons, Balham, West Norwood and Streatham libraries.
