The Abacus story so far…

Abacus Early Learning School is a family run business founded in 1989 by a mother of five Shaaron Petgrave with the help of her mother Marjorie Taylor and her grandmother ‘Margot’ who was then known as just ‘nanny’. Marjorie who is known as Ms Taylor had previously worked as a teacher for many years at the Belleville School and was able to bring her expertise in early years to help set up and establish Abacus as an ‘early learning school’ where children could become confident learners often exceeding expectations.

Abacus nursery first began operating from the ground floor of an Edwardian home conveniently located a stone’s throw from Streatham Hill train station whilst Shaaron, her husband and two young children lived above.

The nursery grew and became popular in a short space of time, so the decision was made to expand into the first floor of the property. Abacus further grew in popularity and a second site was opened in 1994 in St Andrews Church Hall on Laitwood Road in Balham followed by our recent venture Abacus West Norwood which operates out of an Victorian property in the ever popular Julian’s farm area of West Norwood.
